Specimen found in a small sample of coralline algae taken from the extreme lowershore east of the causeway for St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall. 21.03.15.

The sample was a mix of Mesophyllum, Corallina and Jania, which was found growing on a gently sloping sand covered (10mm) bedrock beside a small pool.

Specimen was sent to Germany for DNA sequencing as it was thought to be a member of the molluscan genus Rhodope. However, on closer study it was found to be a flatworm.

Rhodope look very similar to flatworms, and indeed Rhodope were once considered to be flatworms until they were discovered to belong to the mollusca.

Here I must thank Prof. Gerhard Haszprunar, Dr. Michael Schrödl and Bastian Brenzinger of the Zoologische Staatssammlung München for trying to help identify the species. Sadly this time the species wasn't a Rhodope.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
