- on Ascophyllum / Egg wrack 1

Parasitic marine nematode / eelworms found inside an Obelia, hydroid-covered Lepas pectinata, Small gooseneck barnacle, on Ascophyllum nodosum, Egg or Knotted wrack; washed-up during during northerly gales at Perranporth Beach, Perranporth, Cornwall. 30.01.15.

The species here appears to be bioluminescent, which makes me wonder if this is taken from Lepas, from it's developing eggs or ovaries. I've no idea what the species of nematode is, it may be quite specific to Lepas pectinata, Lepas, or have a wide range of possible hosts. It may be a British native species, or it might be a species from the east coast of the USA or Canada, from where the barnacles originated.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
