Specimen above found on sampling from sides of pontoons of Newlyn Marina, Newlyn, Cornwall. 30.10.18. The specimen started to fragment on being stressed by the evaporation of seawater from the dish it was kept in. I have been informed by Prof. Juan Junoy that this fragmentation is not a true form of asexual reproduction as the fragments often degenerate after a few days.

Nemertean / Ribbon worm
Tetrastemma vermiculus
- one stripe between eyes 2

This rather distinctive Tetrastemma normally has dark stripes between its eyes. Here is an example of an oddity, a specimen with only one stripe. This potentially means forms with no stripes between the eyes may be possible. The stripes are in the main constant as an external identification feature but it means more care might be needed in identifying Tetrastemma without stripes between the eyes. The specimen was small, and found on the lowershore at Chimney Rocks, Penzance, Cornwall. 03.10.16.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
