Approx 90mm long specimen found in a sample of small but old Saccorhiza polyschides, Furbellows, holdfasts collected from a pontoon at Newlyn Marina, Newlyn, Cornwall, 04.02.17.

The specimen above is a new species for the UK. Verification and further information with thanks to Alfonso Herrera Bachiller, who has found the species at Ceuta (a Spanish autonomous city that shares a border with Morocco), on the Straight of Gibraltar. He also knows of it from the Mediterranean, Catalonia.

This southern European species was described by Hubrecht in 1879 from a specimen found in Naples, Italy. Hubrecht stated that Grube had previously found examples in the Adriatic Sea. Langerhans reports the species as being found in Madeira 1880. The species is found in the North Atlantic, Straits and Alboran and Levantine-Balearic, marine subdivision of Madeira and English Channel. The species is regarded as rare, either being found in limited numbers or just one individual, at a small number of widely spread locations.

The author of this website has now found three new southern species of nemerteans in the UK (Cornwall ), they include Nemertopsis bivittata, Lineus grubei and Vieitezia luzmurubeae.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
